Curriculum Development for Medical Education At a time when society is demanding accountability from the medical education system naturopathic medicine education and residency review committees are demanding written curricula, this book offers a practical, yet theoretically sound, approach to curriculum development in medicine.The approach described in Curriculum Development for Medical Education has evolved over the past ten years, during which time the authors have taught curriculum development naturopathic medicine education and evaluation skills to faculty naturopathic medicine education and fellows in the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators. Program participants have used the techniques described here to develop curricula on topics as diverse as advance directives, office gynecology for the generalist, a renal elective for internal medicine residents, naturopathic medicine education and an office-based preceptorship for first-year medical students.Short, practical, naturopathic medicine education and generic in its approach, the book begins with an overview of a six-step approach to curriculum development. Each succeeding chapter then covers one of the six steps: problem identification; targeted needs assessment; goals naturopathic medicine education and objectives; education methods; implementation; naturopathic medicine education and evaluation. Additional chapters address curriculum maintenance, enhancement, naturopathic medicine education and dissemination. Throughout, examples are used to illustrate major points. An appendix provides the reader with a selected list of published naturopathic medicine education and unpublished resources on funding, faculty development, naturopathic medicine education and already developed curricula. Cultural Diversity And Education About the Author James A. Banks is the Russell F. Stark University Professor naturopathic medicine education and Director of the Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has received many awards naturopathic medicine education and honors for his research naturopathic medicine education and professional service. He was elected president of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) in 1982 naturopathic medicine education and later received that organizations Distinguished Career Research Award. In 1997, he was elected president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). From AERA, Professor Banks has received the Research Review Award (1993), a Distinguished Career Contribution Award (1996), naturopathic medicine education and the inaugural Social Justice Award (2004) for his work demonstrating the critical role of education research in supporting social justice. Professor Banks is a member of the Board of Children, Youth, naturopathic medicine education and Families of the National Research Council naturopathic medicine education and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2004 naturopathic medicine education and is a member of its Board of Directors. In 2005, he received the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member at the University of Washington when he was selected to give the universitys 29th Annual Faculty Lecture. Professor Banks will be a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford during the 20052006 academic year. Widely regarded as a founder of multicultural education, Professor Banks holds honorary doctorates from five universities.
